Day Four-Fighting Against Fear-In The Midst of A Storm
Fear is a great motivator. It wraps itself around you and won't let go. You try in your own strength to get rid of it. It never works. Fear grows. It takes prisoners. It can make you sick. I am presently fighting against the fear that this damn coronavirus is spreading.
It is fear that is closing everything down. There is no truth in fear. It is unsettling and has the ability to rob you of joy. We are in the midst of a huge, life threatening storm. The politicians are sharpening their swords of dismay and terror. They want us to live in fear and poverty. They hate success. They want nothing more than to ruin you. That is the message that is vibrating through the airwaves now. It is a message that I've been hearing most of my life.
I chose to fight against the fear that wants to possess me. I know that I can't do it alone. I rely on the promises of God. He promises not to leave me. The verse that struck with me today as I was dealing with fear probably isn't any verse that you may expect. Yet in a strange way it comforts me to know that I can do something. Here in I Kings Chapter 9, verse 13-14, we read: "Whenever I hold back the rain or send locusts to eat up the crops or send an epidemic on my people, if they pray to me and repent and turn away from the evil they have been doing, then I will hear them in heaven, forgive their sins, and make their land prosperous again."
Admittedly we are wallowing in sin. It is obvious that many have succumbed to the temporary and sacrificed the eternal. We are fighting with each other, and giving in to the fear and anxiety that Satan and his minions are pushing. We really do need to pray that God will be merciful to us, that he will forgive us if we are truly repentant, and not playacting. The thing that has struck me is the attitude that God is weak or that he won't do anything when we blatantly disobey his directives. It does need to be understood that God is not weak, and he won't let you do anything without consequences. It is a message that has been missing for too long. We are all sinners saved by God's grace. He is a God of Wrath and it is good not to forget this. If we do, we risk basically thinking that sin is no big deal. It is. God sent his son to die for our sins.
It is Jesus who is the author of our faith. He sacrificed so that we may live with God forever in heaven. We are in the midst of a storm, but we are not alone. It is good to remember this.
